Awake or Asleep? Why Your Newborn Photos Will Be Beautiful Either Way. Denver Newborn Photographer

If you're getting ready to book a newborn session, chances are you've had at least one moment of panic:

"What if my baby won't sleep for the photos?" "What if they are fussy the whole time?" "What if all we get are pictures of them crying?"

Take a breath. I hear this worry from almost every parent, and I promise - it's one of the least scary parts of the whole process. Let me explain why.

The Truth About Newborn Sessions

Babies don't read the script. Some drift off within the first ten minutes and stay asleep the entire session. Others are wide awake, wiggly, and full of expression from start to finish. Most land somewhere in between - a little bit of both. Trust me after 17 years of photographing Denver's little ones, I have seen everything.

And here's the secret: that's exactly what makes a session beautiful.

The Magic of an Awake Baby

An awake baby gives us something sleep simply can't...personality. Those wide, pure  newborn eyes. The tiny frown before a cry. The stretch, the yawn, the funny little expressions they make. These are the fleeting moments that remind you just how brand new this little one is.

Awake photos tend to feel more alive, more candid and give a little glimpse of the person your baby is already becoming.

The Magic of a Sleeping Baby

Then there's sleep. There's a reason so many of the most iconic newborn images are of a baby curled up, totally at peace. Sleep gives us stillness, and stillness gives us those soft, classic poses - the tiny hands tucked under a chin, the peaceful curve of a spine, the stillness that lets all the tiny details shine through: eyelashes, lips, fingers, toes.

These are the images that tend to feel timeless — the ones you'll frame and look at years from now, still amazed at how small your baby once was.

So Which Is "Better"?

Neither. That's the whole point.

Every session is a mix, and that mix is what makes it yours. A session with a wide-awake baby who gives us thirty minutes of dreamy eye contact is a win. A session where baby sleeps through the whole thing and we capture every soft, sleepy pose is a win too. Most sessions land somewhere in the middle, and that variety is what makes your gallery feel complete and a true reflection of who your baby was in the first few weeks, awake and asleep.

My Goal Is To Meet Your Baby Where They're At

I don't force sleep, and I don't force awake. My job is to follow your baby's lead - to be patient, to work with whatever mood they're in, and to find the beauty in both the wide-eyed moments and the sleepy ones. Some of my favorite images have come from babies who never slept a wink, and some of my favorite images have come from babies who slept through the entire session without stirring.

So if you're worried your baby "won't cooperate" Please don't be. There's no wrong way for a newborn to show up to their own photo session. Awake or asleep, we'll capture exactly who they are right now, in this fleeting, beautiful stage.

Ready to book your own newborn session? I have been a Denver Newborn Photographer for over 17 years now and I would love to meet your little one — however they show up on the day.
